ACTIONS - LEADING AND FOLLOWING actions are easy - example: when a character land one foot makes contact and then the other...or if you lift the arms - one arm goes up and then the other.

OVERLAPPING ACTIONS - example the character comes to a halt and her hair and dress continue to flow and settle into place. To be effective the overlapping has to use "S" curves to change direction.

DRAG ACTION - is where you show a drag on a form as it moves through space. This usually occurs at the ends of the form. If a rubber raft is falling, the middle edge will be intact - the other edges will bend or drag back.

MOTIVATIONAL FORCES - what makes thing move - 80% or more of all actions happen because of the hips and legs. If a character throws a ball the action starts with the extension (unfolding) of the front leg which rotates the hips and create toque with the torso and allows the unwinding of the torso to lead the shoulder and the rest of the arm through a throwing motion. Another example: a character can't turn unless he pushes off on the outside foot - then he can change direction.

Thinking time (a character ALWAYS thinks before it does anything).

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ACTIONS - easy example in a walk - the legs are the primary action - then arms are the secondary action.

ANTICIPATION - (or ANTIC) In a grab, the hand comes up and backward before it goes forward.

COMPENSATION - If a character is running and stops - you have to compensate for the forward momentum (usually by driving the forces up - or down and then up.)

REVERSALS - try to work as many reversals into the spine as possible (as long as it makes sense to the action). The spine is curved forward - then curves back during an antic and then curves forward when the character picks up a stone. HINT: My next lesson at the Toon Institute will have this information.

A CUSHION OR SETTLE is where you move passed a key frame into an extreme/extreme and then cushion back into the original key frame.

A MOVING HOLD is a very, very slow slow-out of an action - to where the movement is coming to a creeping halt.

ANIMATION EXCERCISES:

1) Try to display the emotions a character might go through while waiting for a bus that's late. Pay close attention to facial expressions, body language, and detail.

2) Have a character try to open something (i.e. a present) that refuses to open. The character can only use body parts for the first minute, but may resort to other measures (i.e. tools and explosives) thereafter. Note, the character will be affected by the tools used (i.e. blast of an explosion). After you've mastered this, try to do the same thing with a normally inanimate object (i.e. lamp) as your lead character.

3a) Animate someone riding a pogo stick or some other 'fun' object (i.e. using a hoola hoop).

3b) Have your character use a weighted object, such as a hammer or a shovel. Demonstrate how the weight of the object affects the stance and demeanor of the character using it.

4) Create a walk cycle, then vary it to accommodate different attitudes and 'character'. For example: Angry, happy, sneaky, limping, carrying a heavy object, sleep walking, etc.

5) Animate two characters sawing a log. The first character is a big, muscular brute. Animate him pose-to-pose first and cycle his animation. The second character is a scrawny little guy who gets yanked around, grabbing onto the saw for dear life.

6) Have a character bend down, pick up something heavy, and throw it. This exercise can help you with timing, emphasizing weight, and anticipation.

7) Put a short character in a tall room with one window, one door, one light (and switch) and a hanging ceiling fan (with hanging switch). The room contains 3 boxes, a ball, and a board. Imagine the different ways your character could figure out how to reach the hanging switch and then animate the most outrageous. Next, subtract two boxes and add a skateboard and try again.

virtual city review

it has been a long time since i reviewed any game, least i had put here. so here it goes

Virtual city

From the past few weeks i had been very addicted to this simple game. well its been a long time since these type of game were created. first it was transport tycoon which is notably called mother of all tycoon games. well it had almost everything then there was capitalism which came out with a sequel and far more addictive "capitalism - II". well i believe Virtual city is a mix of both transport tycoon and capitalism -2.

basically its a small game which doe snot take much of your hard disk space or ram. but at the same time a brilliant game. it has the same top view as in capitalism 2 or transport tycoon.

in transport tycoon a player creates a network(air/water/goods) for supply and demand by trucks, trains, bus, plane, ships. but constructing a house is not possible and ofcoarse creating industry is possible when you have lots of cash

in capitalism the player creates industry and tries to sell it through malls or supermarket etc. it does not have the transporting aspect which is a big give away but still it is addicting in trying to become a billioair by vying against competitors.

in virtual city you not only create houses or industries but you can also upgrade it. you need to take care of people happiness, you also have to take care of environment which will be affected by constructing houses or industries. in some missions environment is a major goal so you may need to build more parks. you need to transport the materials from one industry to another till the final product is achieved and need to be transported to a shopping mall, there are also garbage collecting trucks. if the garbage is not collected from a house then the population happiness, environment decreases finally population count decreases. you can alsoi build theatres, stadium and can transport people with the busses. so you see its a very interesting and addicting game. the only give away in the game is there are no competitors, the games released these days lack that. all i want to say to the makers of the game 'GOOD GOING GUYS - THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL GAME'

they said that there is lot of tension going on with telengana issue, so cannot call any of them till it ends and they are not working for past 1 month....

seriously i got many friends who are working in hitech city and they are not aware of any "tension" ruining their work. i think they should think of a good reason to tell

snip-bit: already 1000 people have applied for test!! 3.10 crores siphoned off. thanks to people who have read "how to get conned for Dummies"

I have applied for the test and have received the confirmation call from them about the receiving of the money.My name is under the registered candidates list and so are my friends'.The exam details will be sent to us soon for intimation.Why would any fraud company call so many people back to confirm the receipt of money? Plus there is written on the site at one place that people from reputed companies with 5 yrs. experience need not pay but only come with the valid documents regarding their experience.Why would they even bother mentioning this if they were frauds?Also then they would not conduct the test in sessions...i mean why not take money from the candidates in one roll and run away?I think they have already conducted one round of tests...I am not at all taking their side but instead trying to analyze. ok..maybe they are a new company trying to set up at Hyderabad..so there may not be any solid backgrounds or so but i guess i am taking this chance for an opportunity to find employment for experience.And it is not an "entrance exam" but rather technical tests in the respective specializations.And since technical tests are taken at almost all of the studios around the world so nothing new in that.As you guys said,there may not be many workstations,but maybe they are charging the money to set up the required workstations for the candidates' test since they are starting anew.They may be also taking the money as a caution..coz what if once they setup the whole thing with their money and the student doesnt show up...not a very promising thing for a new studio i guess....big studios can afford this but not the newbies.Anything is possible. in the said website they are showing as a registered company which is ofcoarse u need to pay and become a visitor, they have not shown as as exhibitor, even u can register a fake company and it does not qualify for being legitimate... well thats a different overview altogether.

many of my friends have applied, and luckily i did not apply for it and they also got confirmation calls and they are on stand-by for exam dates from past 2 months. if u get a exam call then i guess u must be pretty lucky.

and about the "experience of 5 yrs" limit i never been told of anywhere in a studio, moreover do u think a fraud company will advertise themselves as frauds on their websites???

and about taking money and running away u are thinking small scale, think of it as every month 100 people apply, 100*3000 = 3,00,000 without doing anything, or without any1 asking about it, something like say pocket money, u really think u get conned in a day?? haven't u heard of all chit fund frauds or ponzi's scheme?? the guy who devised this plan is really genius...

technical tests are taken all over the world and its a must in our industry but have u come across dreamworks or pixar or take local paprikaas, rhythm and hues or any other studio taking money like this??

and what caution are you talking about not attending the interview, if they really want talented guys they can put here with cgtantra... i wish u were more cautious..

do u know from where a studio earns, from its clients or its own product (ip) . if i am starting a new studio then i will defenitely take the client route and when a client signs up, the client will be parting with a percentage of the project amount that will be used for paying salaries and other expenditures.
when a student joins a studio,they make contract with student ............ so i dont agree with ur theory of "how they might be using ur money"

if u dont believe in the talent u got, and say "beggars cannot be choosers" how will u convince the company who hires you??

Finally i am just saying with the recession, doubts about industry recovery, future of animation in india we have fallen a pit dont dig it to make it a well

MAAC gets gobled up by arena(aptech)

this has been the saddest part to be known that the very institute that created a niche for itself as the first institute to produce quality animators and vfx arists have been taken out by none other than arena which itself lists at the last few places in terms of quality is concerned.

the deal is said to be around Rs.75 crores which is a pity considering maac once earned in the range of Rs.200 crores before the recession set in.

maac had been a major player in the animation field and there had been no real competitors before frameboxx broke out of its shadow taking along much of the quality people along with it. after the breakup maac tried to regain the lost ground but as luck would have it, the jobs in the animation industry dried up leaving behind many grumpy students who had finished their training and were targetting maac by bad mouthing.

well many people say recession caused the downfall to me it was the bad decision to let people go to frameboxx did it in....

fraud companies ruining the industry

The outbreak of recession has found many companies spring up, not with the intention of making animation or anything of that sort but to take the opportunity to get-rich-quick.

I was a victim of one such company, which i don't wish to name because the wounds haven't healed yet. but for future reference as where we should not apply i am creating this thread.

The industry should take necessary steps to weed out the scamsters who squeeze the talented people to think twice before applying anywhere.

with this i want to ask the many experts over here the guidance about some companies.

first company which came to my mind when i was writing this was a website where many of my friends have applied to what it seems to me as a scam
the company is called

basically it doesn't look extra ordinary. but they have a list of "BUSINESS CONTACT (ANIMATION)" where they have put numerous names, if you google it, it goes no where including the "NYSA" returns zero results.

second:

it says it has operation in europe and india, but the contact address has only india.

third:

the section in careers says:

"Applicants wishing to apply for 3D DIVISION, COMPOSITING and EDITING DIVISIONS they are required to bare "ENTRANCE EXAM" Fee.This is our company rule and Condition."

"ENTRANCE EXAM Registration Fee are 45 euros only (INDIAN RUPEES 3150 INR. Inclusive of all taxes, All govt of india public examination rules are applicable)"

now my question is imagine 40 people are taking, then 40*3150 = 1,26,000

not every1 are selected so what happens to the money, do they show it to govt.??

are they giving a three year degree course where "ENTRANCE EXAM" is required?

they also have blocked list or rejected list who cannot apply for 5 years, why were they blocked or rejected??

finally:

there is no showreel of the work they have done.

i kindly request the industry experts here in CGtantra to guide us on this issue.

the year 2009 has been the worst of my life. first i lost my job, then i got myself into a "ponzi & pyramid scheme", paid it through credit card. after that i began to hide from the bank people who came knocking at the door.

the quote i chose for this was because i understood it as its better to face it rather than hide from the facts. i started to google about the jobs i can do online because i had heard many times before that people made money or "moola" out of it.
